First, let's think practically 
How do you intend to use the room? How much foot traffic will the rug incur? Do you have pets? Kids? Or what about a partner who always seems to have dirt on their shoes? (That's a serious question and will most likely not end in ivory). 

Size & shape matters
Another practical matter that can be easily determined with the right guidance (hello). The size and shape of your rug should depend on three main factors: the size of your room, your furniture placement and the rug’s function.

Placement calls the shots 
Rugs come in many materials, with varying characteristics related to how well they wear and how easy they are to clean. If the rug is in an entry hall or under the kitchen table, consider something that’s a little more robust.
