Choosing the Perfect Rug: Tips on Size and Placement

Here at Granite Lane, we know rugs serve as so much more than floor coverings; they form the foundation of interior design and styling, capable of anchoring a room, introducing texture, and serving as a modern accent piece. Whether you seek to enhance durability by protecting your floors or simply aim to elevate your decor, rugs offer a refined solution.

We know that selecting the right rug involves more than just choosing size and colours; it's about achieving the perfect placement, texture, and shape.

For those unable to visit our Osborne Park showroom and meet with our interior styling and rug experts, we offer a room-by-room guide that provides invaluable tips for selecting the ideal rug for your home.

Living Room

When choosing a rug for this space, consider two guiding principles:

Under the Furniture: In open-plan living spaces, consider choosing a rug spacious enough to accommodate the front legs of your sofa or main furniture pieces, with an additional 10-15cm of rug extending beyond. This ensures that the rug maintains proportional alignment with the area, fostering a relaxed and welcoming ambiance.

Traditional Arrangement: If your furniture is positioned against the wall, opt for a rug that either extends to the edges of the furniture or begins no less than 20cm in front of your sofa. While this layout leans towards a more formal aesthetic, it's crucial to select a rug of manageable size to prevent the space from feeling cramped.

💡 We recommend a natural fibre, such as a wool area rug, as it adds warmth and softness to the look and feel of a room. Wool is stain-resistant, durable, and resilient, bouncing back after compression.

Dining Room

Start by considering your table shape and size:

Depending on whether you have a round, square, or rectangular table, you'll determine what type of rug works best in terms of scale and proportion. If you're seeking a more traditional option, an oval-shaped rug may be ideal as it can fit neatly under most tables without occupying excessive space.

The general rule of thumb is to choose a rug that extends at least 70cm either side of the table.

Next, contemplate the style of your room. This will help narrow down options that align with the overall look and feel you're aiming for.

💡 We recommend selecting a flat-weave or short-pile rug. Since spills are inevitable, and the ease of pulling a chair back is essential, flat-weave or low-pile rugs are the practical choice for the dining room.

BEDROOM

Consider these tips for bedroom rug placement:

Measure the dimensions of your bed and consider how you want it to relate to the rug.

The general rule of thumb is to choose a rug that extends at least 60cm beyond the sides and foot of the bed. This provides a soft and comfortable surface to step onto when getting out of bed, while also grounding the bed and creating a seamless transition between the rug and the rest of the room.

💡 We recommend choosing from a wool rug, which is soft, elegant, and durable, or low-pile textures or natural fibre rugs, which are often more durable, typically soft, and designed for easy cleaning.
